About Green Fingers Daily
Hi, I’m James — a gardener based in Greater Manchester with 18 years of getting my hands dirty in gardens across the North West.
I have spent the better part of two decades maintaining and transforming residential gardens for homeowners who mostly want the same two things: a garden that looks good and does not eat their weekends. Over the years I have managed more than 50 long-term client gardens, worked with property developers on new-build landscaping, and become something of a specialist in the gardens that most advice ignores — small urban plots, shaded city courtyards, and spaces that get three hours of sun on a good day.
I started Green Fingers Daily because most gardening content online is written for someone with a large south-facing garden, unlimited time, and apparently perfect soil. That is not most of us. Certainly not in Manchester.
What You Will Find Here
Practical guides that work in real British conditions — not idealised ones. Every article is written from experience, not from copying what someone in California does with their raised beds.
We cover:
- Growing your own food — vegetables, herbs, and fruit for every skill level and space size
- Small space and container gardening — balconies, patios, and yards where every square foot counts
- Low-maintenance planting systems — designed around your life, not the other way around
- Shaded and north-facing gardens — the problem no one talks about enough
- Regional climate advice — because the North West, Scotland, and the South East are essentially three different countries when it comes to growing seasons
Why Location Matters More Than Most Guides Admit
Growing in Greater Manchester means dealing with a last frost that can catch you out into late April, rainfall that is higher than most of England, and summers that are cooler than gardening books tend to assume. What works in Kent in March may not work here until May.
I flag these differences throughout the site — not to complicate things, but to save you the frustration of following generic advice that was never written for your postcode.
Who This Is For
Whether you are growing for the first time on a rented flat balcony, or you have had an allotment for years and want to get more out of it — you are in the right place. No jargon, no assumptions, just what works.
